LoRaWAN and the IN865 band
LoRaWAN is a low-power, long-range radio network protocol for battery-powered devices that send small amounts of data, such as meter readings. In India it uses the IN865 regional parameters in the 865–867 MHz band, which is licence-free for low-power devices; the radio equipment still needs WPC type approval.
Why it matters
A battery-powered meter can report over LoRaWAN for long periods, and one gateway can serve many meters across a colony or village. A utility can run its own network instead of paying for a mobile data plan on every meter.
