What a water supply scheme needs from its meters

  • Accurate billing

A bill is only as sound as the reading behind it. A meter that registers correctly across its range, including the low flows of a household connection, keeps the bill close to the water the consumer actually drew. That is what calibration and testing are for.

  • Fewer estimated bills

When a meter reader cannot reach a house, or a dial is fogged or buried, the bill is estimated, and an estimate is hard to defend when a consumer disputes it. Automatic meter reading sends the reading by radio, so a locked gate no longer means a guessed bill.

  • Finding losses

Water that is treated and pumped but never billed is lost revenue, whether it leaks from pipes, is drawn through unrecorded connections or passes through meters that under-read. Metering at the supply point and at each household connection lets an operator compare what went into the network with what was billed.

  • A record for audits

Funding, tariffs and scheme performance are reviewed against records. Readings held per consumer and per scheme give the department a record of supply and billing, connection by connection.

Non-revenue water and how metering helps find it

Non-revenue water (NRW) is the difference between the water a utility puts into its network and the water it bills. It has three broad parts: physical losses from leaking pipes and overflowing tanks, commercial losses from unrecorded connections and under-reading meters, and authorised use that is never billed, such as firefighting or flushing mains.

Metering makes that difference measurable. A bulk meter at the inlet of a district metered area records what enters the zone, and the meters on the household connections record what is used. The gap between the two over the same period points to how much water the zone is losing. Meterexo holds the consumer readings for each scheme, which is one side of that comparison.

Water put into the network
Billed water Non-revenue water
Physical losses Commercial losses Unbilled authorised use
Not to scale. All the water put into a network is either billed or non-revenue water, and non-revenue water is made up of physical losses, commercial losses and authorised use that is never billed.

How a scheme is metered, from the zone to the bill

Five steps, from the main that feeds a zone to the bills the department sends and the check on what was lost.

  1. A bulk meter at the zone inlet Where the main enters a district metered area, a bulk meter records the water put into the zone.
  2. A meter on every connection Each household connection has its own water meter, which records the water that household draws.
  3. Readings sent by radio Meters fitted with the METRYS AMR-100 send their readings over LoRaWAN radio, so nobody has to visit to read them.
  4. Bills and reports in Meterexo Meterexo files each reading under its consumer and its scheme, and produces bills and reports from them.
  5. Inflow against billed water Set what the bulk meter recorded against what was billed over the same period, and the gap is the water the zone did not bill.

Smart water meters on water supply schemes

METRYS AMR water meters are deployed on water supply schemes whose readings are collected in Meterexo. Each scheme is described on the projects page.

Jal Jeevan Mission and AMRUT 2.0

  • Jal Jeevan Mission

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is the Government of India programme to give every rural household a functional household tap connection. Its schemes bring piped water to villages.

AMRUT 2.0 is the second phase of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, which funds water supply in cities and towns.

Questions from tender officers and contractors

What is in the tender pack?

The pack at the head of this page is one archive of the registrations and certificates that are valid today and the product documents a submission asks for, with a cover sheet listing what is inside. The documents shown on this page can also be downloaded one at a time from its tables. If a tender asks for a paper that is not in the pack, write to the tenders contact beside it.

Which standards are the meters certified to?

The product certificate is CE marking under the Measuring Instruments Directive 2014/32/EU (MID), with MID Modules B and D. The quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015, and a certificate to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the standard for testing and calibration laboratories, has been issued. Each is listed with its number and validity in the registrations table on this page, and the approvals and test reports are in the document tables below it.

Can one supplier provide both the meters and the reading system?

Yes. Mega Worker makes Metrys water meters, the METRYS AMR-100 reading unit is part of the Metrys range, and Meterexo, Mega Worker's meter data management platform, reads the meters and turns the readings into bills and reports. The brands page describes both.

Where are the meter specifications for a technical bid?

On metryswatermeter.com, where the sizes and ratings of each Metrys meter family are published. This page carries the company's papers; the technical detail for each model lives with the product.

How do we request documents?

Write to the tenders contact on this page. Name the tender or the scheme, list the documents you need, and say which format the tender asks for. The contact page has every other way to reach us.

Products for schemes

The meters themselves are described on the Metrys site, with their sizes, classes and standards. This page carries the company documents; that one carries the products.
