NB-IoT
Narrowband Internet of Things, a low-power cellular standard from 3GPP, first in Release 13, that runs on licensed mobile operator spectrum. Meters with an NB-IoT module send readings through the operator's towers, with no private gateway needed.
Why it matters
It suits scattered connections where building a private network makes little sense, but each meter needs a SIM or data plan and depends on the operator's coverage at the meter's location.
