DMA (district metered area)

A section of a distribution network with a defined boundary, fed through one or a few metered inlets, with boundary valves kept closed. Comparing the water entering a DMA with the water billed inside it shows how much that area is losing.

Why it matters

DMAs turn one large, hard-to-read network into smaller areas whose losses can be measured and ranked, so leak crews go where the losses are highest.
