Bulk meter and Woltmann meter

A bulk meter measures large volumes at treatment plant outlets, reservoir inlets, trunk mains and zone entries. The Woltmann meter is a common mechanical type: a vaned rotor turns on an axis parallel to the flow, which keeps pressure loss low at high flow rates. Ultrasonic and electromagnetic meters also serve as bulk meters.

Why it matters

Bulk meters show how much water enters each part of a network. Without them a utility cannot draw up a water balance or tell which zone is losing water.
