Glossary
AMI (advanced metering infrastructure)
A metering system with two-way communication: meters send readings at set intervals and the utility can send commands or settings back. AMI usually includes the meters, a communication network, a head-end system and meter data management software.
Why it matters
Two-way links let a utility change reading intervals, check a meter's status or, on meters fitted with a valve, close supply remotely. AMI is more complex to run than one-way AMR, so match it to what the scheme will use.
