US EPA proposes two more years for water systems to meet PFOA and PFOS limits

18 May 2026

Industry news

On 18 May 2026 the US Environmental Protection Agency announced a proposed rule that would let water systems request two additional years, to 2031, to comply with its drinking water limits for PFOA and PFOS, two chemicals of the PFAS group.

The limits themselves do not change: they remain 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) each. Only the time allowed to meet them would. The comment period on the proposal closed on 20 July 2026.
