Water meter
An instrument that measures, records and displays the volume of water passing through a pipe, usually in cubic metres or litres. Meters are mechanical, with a turning impeller or rotor, or static, with no moving parts, such as ultrasonic and electromagnetic types.
Why it matters
Metering lets a utility bill by use instead of a flat rate, find losses and plan supply. For householders, it is the record behind every water bill.
