Turbidity

The cloudiness of water caused by suspended particles such as silt, clay or organic matter. It is measured with a nephelometer and reported in nephelometric turbidity units (NTU).

Why it matters

Turbid water can shield microbes from disinfection and usually points to a treatment or pipe problem. A rise after rain or after supply restarts is a common warning sign.
