Glossary
Hardness
The amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water, usually expressed as milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate. Hard water leaves scale in pipes, geysers and kettles and makes soap lather poorly.
Why it matters
Scale narrows pipes, makes water heaters less efficient and can build up on the moving parts of mechanical meters, so hardness matters when choosing treatment and planning maintenance.
