Water balance (IWA)

A standard table, developed by the International Water Association, that splits all water entering a system into authorised consumption and water losses, then into billed and unbilled use, apparent and real losses, and revenue and non-revenue water.

Why it matters

It gives every utility the same terms and arithmetic for losses, so results can be compared between zones and years and audited. It is usually the first step in any NRW programme.
